Consulting Project Testimonial - Julie Lankford - Vanderbilt University (USA)

Julie Lankford Director, Global Health
Initiatives at Vanderbilt University Medical
Center Vanderbilt University (USA)

How to face a context of rapid change and economic turmoil as currently experienced in Brazil? There are several possible ways. And Manserv, company engaged in maintenance, facilities, logistics and technology, chose the path of innovation and search for new positions to be occupied in the market. Developing a tuned project for this purpose was the students’ challenge  in the class 6 of the Americas MBA.
The general director of Marserv Ricardo Moreira was  quite impressed with the group of students, which he defines as "very talented people, able to help our understanding  in order to get to the most intelligent path aiming at  taking  these new  areas we  aspire to in Latin America”. For the students, it was an impactful experience, which generated important learning, as they report in the series of posts that we publish as of today.

We start with Julie Lankford, who is director of the nonprofit organization Global Health Initiatives and student of our partner school Vanderbilt University.

“The Americas MBA experience has been an incredibly challenging and enriching experience. Not only did I have the opportunity to learn how to better work as a member of an international team, I was also exposed to an entirely new industry: integrated facilities management. The Capstone project provided the opportunity to effectively apply many of the skills learned in the first year of the program, including my understanding of macroeconomic principles as the team took a closer look at doing business in Colombia.”

In April, we conducted the study trip to Europe with 31 students of our MBA International Executive. The days were intense days, with lessons, discussions with professors, experiences, acquaintanceships and cultural activities that have enriched our intellectual, personal and professional competences.

In the United Kingdom the experience itself of staying at the King's College, an architectural icon of Cambridge University, opened in 1414, is something special. It allows us to feel a bit on how the daily life of students of Europe "1" University is.

There, we had a set of classes which contents could not be better aligned, conducted by a highly respected group of professors. Strategic marketing, economics, innovation and entrepreneurship themes were in focus in the sessions with professors such as Omar Merlo, Tim Minshall and Eden Yin, who teach in the MBA of the University of Cambridge.

In turn, the professors Richard Schoenberg, also of Cambridge University, and Simon Commander, an economist graduated at Cambridge University and an MBA professor at the Institute of Companies, one of the best-ranked in Europe, have provided us information and discussions about the European economy, the refugees’ problem, the debates surrounding the euro (an intense subject in the United Kingdom with a referendum scheduled for June 23rd  to decide whether the country stays in the European Union), and the mergers & acquisitions’ movement on the continent.

The emerging markets have gained prominence in two moments: first, in the class of the Marketing Professor of the Judge Business School of Cambridge, Eden Yin, who addressed the product development and internationalization of companies in developing countries, and second, in the presentation of Jacob O'Mahony, business analyst at Stroz Friedberg and a former MBA student at FIA, who addressed the risk analysis of the organizations and specifically, the cyber threats in Brazil, highlighting the resilience best practices in the cyber world.

Before departing for France, we had the opportunity to make discoveries in another field - the cultural field - in the city tour through Cambridge. Accompanied by local guides, we went through several places and got to know the history of many colleges, their famous students and professors such as the mathematician Alan Turing, who cracked the code of the Germans during the World War II, the physicist Stephen Hawking, Isaac Newton, Frank Whittle Crick and Watson and many others.

In Lyon, our themes were negotiations and business practices in Europe, with the Professors of Fred Seidel and Hans Schlierer; and supply chain, with Professor Ohanes Missirilian, a Brazilian who has been living and working in France for three decades; he has also told us a little bit about this personal experience.

Another highly interesting moment of our journey in France was the visit to EFI Automotive, a family-owned auto parts maker for nearly 80 years, present in all continents. We were greeted by the chairman of the company, who told us about his organization's characteristics and highlighted one of the aspects that he considers particularly relevant: the people management, with a humanized approach that starts already in the integration process of new professionals, with enough time to get to know each other and to adapt themselves to the organizational culture and to the company’s processes. Polite and gently, he confided why, in recent years, he decided not to invest in Brazil, but instead, to open a plant in Mexico.

Also in Lyon we closed the program with a city tour. We visited the old town, knew the secret passages built at the time of World War II, and knew the traditional silk painting ateliers and the tasty local cuisine.

Adding up each piece of this mosaic of activities, the trip to Europe has fulfilled its role in providing us new knowledge, reflexions, ideas and exposure to other cultures and realities. And it allowed us to realize something fundamental: that our professors and students are 100% in tune with the quality standards of these renowned international schools.

Celso de Souza Siqueira Junior - Testimonial

Celso de Souza Siqueira Junior, a former student of Class 45 of the MBA International Executive, ended 2015 advancing one more step in his career: he took over in December as Procurement and Supply Chain Manager - Interiors & Structures at Embraer, where he has worked for almost 20 years. At this new position, new challenges and greater responsibilities have come. Among the important Celso’s strengths to deal with them, are the learning accomplishments and experiences provided by the MBA, as he tells us in the statement below.
Check out:
"In 1997, I was hired by Embraer as Material Planning Engineer. Two years later, I took over my first position of leadership, working as Logistics Supervisor. I had the opportunity to learn and to contribute in a very important phase of the company, with the arrival of new programs / products and multi-plants, both in Brazil and abroad.
I took over as Logistics Manager in 2001 and, after a few years, I have done a career transition taking over the National Supplies Management, focused on the Brazilian suppliers. I have to say that those five years were years of very interesting experiences. Among many themes and projects, I highlight the creation of the Development Program of the National Aeronautics Chain (PDCA), an Embraer initiative aiming at the dissemination, in a structured way, of the Business Excellence for its domestic suppliers.
In December 2015, I was invited to take over the area of International Procurement, responsible for the Interior Technologies and Structures of Embraer aircrafts.
I recognize that this special career moment, especially because of the international outreach, challenges and budget involved, is fully connected with the experiences and learning that I have accumulated over the International Executive MBA of FIA.
Important subjects such as Finance Management, M&A, Innovation, Strategic Marketing and Business Internationalization have been crucial in my professional day to day and in the leveraging of best results in my business task.
I keep as great memory and life experience the classes I attended both in Cambridge - King's College (England) and in the University of Lyon (France) and Vanderbilt (United States).
I always enjoy remembering the MBA 1st class when we had the opportunity to talk with Prof. James Marcovitch. In that class, he explored some cases of “Brazilian Pioneers" and stressed their importance for the development of several strategic areas.
I believe that, in a way, executives graduated at FIA bring with them much of this commitment when it comes to doing the best for our country". We wish a lot of success to Celso!
